Crested Butte is Home

Explore the fascinating, eclectic, and entertaining people and organizations of Crested Butte, CO- and the entire Gunnison Valley through the Crested Butte Is Home podcast. I’ve been honored to sit down with so many amazing people and had the opportunity to sit down and discuss the things they do. One of the questions that I always ask is why my guests still choose to make Crested Butte their home. Commonly, the answer is that Crested Butte is a community that they can’t find anywhere else- indeed, no where else feels like “home”. If you love Crested Butte and the mountain lifestyle, this is the podcast for you.

Better yet- here is just one of the many 5 star reviews from Apple Podcasts:

Great conversations about the community!
Thank you Frank for this great podcast! It feels like I am listening in on a great conversation over a beer/coffee!

My wife and I are currently one year out from our move to CB! This podcast has helped us get to know about the many amazing aspects of this valley! I love that most of your guests said the reason they call CB home is the “community”. It has made us feel more comfortable with our move and very excited to officially call CB home in the (not near enough) future!

The Elk Mountain Grand Traverse is an even bigger event, drawing competitors from around the world to ski the 40 miles from Crested Butte to Aspen.  Pat pioneered the course, has competed every year (finishing all but one time), and won the event as well.  Not bad for a full-time teacher!

Later, while spending time in Europe while his wife pursued her degree, he began paragliding. On any given day when the wind is right, you may very well see Ben or one of his flying friends soaring high above the mountain (there is a take-off near the top of the Monument ski run).

Today, Carrie Jo has taken all of those experiences and uses them to help her clients at her Crossfit gym, Synergy Athlete.  As I listened to Carrie Jo, it struck me that she is a great motivator thanks to her life experiences and how she can relate those to goal setting.  Finally, we discuss community, and a terrific non-profit that she supports.

During a Grand Traverse Ski race from Crested Butte to Aspen, Krista also started to think about making energy gels and energy powdered drinks with maple syrup.  She talks about those products and even lets us in on a product that she hasn't quite released yet.

Andy Eflin was born in Crested Butte the same year the ski area started- 1961. His dad, Dick Eflin, started the resort, along with Fred Rice.  Class sizes were just a bit smaller back then- Andy had only one other kid in his class and eventually he attended school in Gunnison, as Crested Butte students did through the 1990's.

Karen Hoskin can be described as a serial entrepreneur, having started a number of businesses over the years.  She is perhaps best known for Montanya Distillers, however, which produces craft rum right here in Crested Butte.  The tasting room, located in the heart of Crested Butte across the street from the post office, has become one of Crested Butte's go-to visits for small plates and a delicious rum cocktail.

Johnny Biggers moved to Gunnison to attend Western State College in 1979.  (The college has since been renamed Western Colorado University)  What makes his story unique is that he grew up halfway across the world in Australia, but his love of skiing, along with a magazine article, brought him to the mountains of Colorado.  After […]

Ben Pritchett grew up, well, everywhere.  Somehow, he still developed a love of outdoor sports like mountain biking and skiing.  Eventually finding himself in the Gunnison Valley, Ben attended Western State College (now known as Western Colorado University). One day, he decided he should stay home and study rather than go backcountry skiing with his […]

Tim Poppe originally hails from Houston Texas, as do so many of our residents and visitors.  After a move to Denver further shaped his love of outdoor sports, Tim was able to relocate to Crested Butte.  Tim is a physical therapist, so on the one hand you hope you’ll never meet him.  If you do […]

Maddie Rehn is a rarity in Crested Butte- she grew up in the mountains of Colorado, rather than the midwest or east coast like so many locals here.  Spending time in the Colorado Outdoors gave Maddie a love for our public lands, and now she works to protect that amazing public resource.  78% of Gunnison […]

Tim Kugler grew up in Northern Virginia and developed a love for mountains and mountainbiking in college there.  After some time in California and elsewhere, a roadtrip led Tim to Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley. Like so many others that live here, he decided to stay, and now resides in Gunnison.  Tim furthered his […]

Barb Peters grew up in 1980’s Crested Butte- a place far different than the Crested Butte of today.  And yet in some ways, it wasn’t that different- the kids of those times grew up as athletes just as many do today.  Because of that, Barb competed in the first US Extreme Skiing Championships and quickly […]

Another Midwesterner now calling Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley home, Cooper Ott has been dominating the professional Enduro mountain bike racing circuit for the past couple of years.  Enduro racing requires the stamina to make it up to the top of the trails, but the timing doesn’t really start until the downhill- so in […]
