Hiking Peaks in the Crested Butte Area

Blog

The peaks surrounding Crested Butte may not be as famous as some of the higher peaks in Colorado, but they are well worth the hike required to summit them. Some of my favorite peaks in the area include Mount Owen (13,058′), Teocalli Mountain (13,208′), and Gothic Mountain (12,625′). Another great option is climbing to the top of Crested Butte itself, which can be climbed via a maintained trail from the top of the Silver Queen lift, which runs throughout the summer. Many of the peaks are technically easy-moderate, with the primary hazards being weather and altitude, and faint trails often lead to the summits. Perhaps the best way to experience the local mountains is to do one of the “peak of the week” guided climbs with Crested Butte Mountain Guides. Wondering about conditions or the best access to a specific peak in the area? I’ve climbed most of them, so feel free to contact me and I’ll do what I can to help. Hoping to hike a fourteener while you’re in the Crested Butte area? Well, I’ve climbed all of them as well- twice in fact, so I’m always happy to share that information too. While it is possible to climb Elk range fourteeners such as Castle from Crested Butte, the best bet is climbing the fourteeners near Lake City, which is only an hour and a half away and has some of the state’s best, such as Handies and Wetterhorn. Happy hiking!
