Neil Beltchenko started mountain biking and quickly realized he had both an aptitude and a passion for bikepacking. For those of you who don’t know, bikepacking is more or less backpacking, but with all your camping gear strapped on your mountain bike so you can ride your bike instead of hiking. Neil has competed in, and often wins, long distance mountain bike races such as the Colorado trail race, the Arizona trail race, the Highland Trail 550 in Scotland, the Iditarod Trail Invitational 350 in Alaska (in winter!) and the granddaddy of them all, the Tour Divide from Banff to Mexico along the Continental Divide. These races are point to point, self supported, and the really crazy part is that the less you sleep, the farther you can go in a day, assuming you can handle sleep deprivation.
On this episode, you’ll learn more about bikepacking, Neil’s favorite mountain bike trails and routes in Crested Butte, and what he loves most about living in Crested Butte.
