One great way to grow an appreciation for where you are is to learn the local history. Crested Butte is lucky to have such an amazing museum in the heart of downtown. The museum features artifacts from Crested Butte’s early days as a coal mining supply town for outlying gold and silver towns, and follows the town’s history into the present day as a recreation mecca. Kids are sure to enjoy the town model complete with a running train, as well as the coal miner display with the poor little canary. The museum also takes great pride in preserving the memories of the (mostly) Slavic miners who were here long before the ski lifts. If you’re looking for a souvenir, the gift shop is one of the area’s best. The museum often hosts other events, such as a speaker series during busier times of the year.
