78% of Gunnison County’s 3,239 square miles is owned by the federal government. Needless to say, that means that there is plenty of room to roam- and thankfully there is a great trail system to access all that land. Many beloved trails leave right from town, including the lower loop, Tony’s trail, and Green Lake. Other popular trails include Oh-Be-Joyful, West Maroon Pass, Judd Falls, and the trails of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, including a trail right to the peak. The trails run the gamut from all-day, rugged affairs to family-friendly short jaunts. Several Wilderness areas surround the area, so it’s easy to get away from motorized vehicles and mountain bikes if that is your preference.
