The city of Gunnison Colorado was incorporated in 1880, and is the county seat of Gunnison County which also includes Crested Butte. Gunnison was a major railroad stop, servicing the surrounding mining towns, as well as a ranching community, as it is today. Home to roughly 6,000 people, Gunnison is also the home of Western State Colorado University, a four year liberal arts college. Gunnison has also been transforming itself into an outdoor Mecca, with biking, hiking, rock climbing, skiing, hunting, fishing, and river sports all contributing to the local economy. Blue Mesa reservoir, Colorado’s largest body of water, is roughly 10 miles west of Gunnison. Gunnison has a reputation as “Sunny Gunny”, thanks to the abundant sunshine.
Real estate in Gunnison is highly varied. Some of the larger and more well known neighborhoods include Dos Rios, the Hartman Rocks area, Ohio Meadows, North Gunnison, and Van Tuyl Village.
Gunnison’s central Colorado location makes it an ideal base for mountain adventures. Three major mountain ranges, the Sawatch, Elk, and San Juans, are within a 45 minute drive from Gunnison. Gunnison is also home to the Gunnison-Crested Butte airport, with non-stop service from Denver as well as Dallas, Houston, and other major cities.
