Highway 50 Roadwork Between Gunnison and Montrose 2021-22

Blog

Starting April 2021 (currently estimated as the week of April 12-16), an extensive roadwork project will begin on US Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose in what is known as Little Blue Canyon. This is a windy, narrow part of the highway near the turn to the Arrowhead subdivision. While access from Gunnison to Lake City will not be affected, Gunnison to Montrose will be severely affected and you’ll want to take a different route or carefully time your travels if you don’t want to do a lengthy detour. The main detour route will be Highway 92, which is also quite narrow and eventually reaches Delta via the town of Hotchkiss. While this is a scenic drive near the North rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, it will add two hours travelling between Gunnison and Montrose. In the summer, Kebler Pass is a good option, especially for Crested Butte residents (Gunnison residents can also take Ohio Pass to Kebler). Keep in mind that the road will be completely closed at night during weekdays. Construction is expected to take until late 2022- although it is possible that by summer of 2022, the closures won’t be quite as extensive. More info can be found at US50Info.com.
