One of the best places in the state of Colorado to play hockey has to be Gunnison County. With a covered outdoor rink and an enclosed refrigerated sheet in Gunnison, plus a rink in Crested Butte South, and yet another covered rink in downtown Crested Butte, it’s one of the easiest and least expensive places to skate in the state. Leagues run in both Gunnison and Crested Butte, and both towns support youth hockey teams. The talent level is surprisingly high, with several players having Division 1 NCAA experience or more. And in such a small town, many of them freely offer advice and/or coaching to the less experienced skaters. Hockey isn’t your thing? Well, there is also a lot of open time to just skate. For more info, contact the Crested Butte Recreation Department or the Gunnison Valley Hockey Association.
