The Cranor Hill Ski Area is located roughly 10 miles north of Gunnison and 20 miles south of Crested Butte. Founded in 1962, Cranor Hill is owned by the city of Gunnison and still operates today when conditions permit. The small ski area has one lift and 300 vertical feet of skiing, at a very reasonable price. At one time it had lights for night skiing- it’s too bad it doesn’t anymore, as I believe it would be a great amenity for kids if it did. This special area is a quiet and spectacular place to live as well, with huge vistas to the Anthracite range and Carbon Peak towering over the Gunnison River valley. The North Valley subdivision is located at the base of Cranor Hill (you could almost call it ski in ski out!), and other neighboring subdivisions include Lost Canyon, Gunnison Riverbanks, and Rockey River Estates. (One would think that it should be spelled Rocky River, but there really is an ‘e’ in there). The North Gunnison area is perfect for other activities such as fishing, road biking, and horseback riding.
The location also makes access to Crested Butte and the surrounding Elk Mountains a few minutes shorter compared to other Gunnison neighborhoods. Another option for those searching for a North Gunnison home is Ohio Meadows.
