Crested Butte has been known as a Mountain Bike Mecca for years, but that doesn’t mean that the skinny tire aficionados are left out of the fun. Popular local rides include Prospect Drive, Washington Gulch, and the Skyland area. The best rides are just down valley, including Lake City via Highway 149, the Cochetopa area via Highway 114, Taylor River Road, Ohio Creek Road, Monarch Pass, and the views of Black Canyon National Park via Highway 92. Riders who don’t mind well-maintained dirt roads can also tackle Kebler and Cottonwood Passes. Several bike tours visit the area, including “Ride the Rockies”. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge, America’s most prestigious road race, has often featured Crested Butte and Gunnison as stage starts/finishes.
